{"id":37,"date":"2025-03-02T21:18:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-02T21:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/galaxyexplorer.org\/blog\/?p=37"},"modified":"2025-09-01T03:32:58","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T03:32:58","slug":"my-first-research-paper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/galaxyexplorer.org\/blog\/?p=37","title":{"rendered":"My First Research Paper"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After a long wait of more than 3 months, my first research paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsr.org\/hs\/index.php\/path\/article\/view\/8893\">From Theory to Observational Results: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations Detected at High Redshift Ranges<\/a>, finally got published by Journal of Student Research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This research paper grew out of my science research project at the&nbsp;<strong>Academy of Loudoun<\/strong>, which I began in September 2024. Astronomy and space have fascinated me since childhood, so I was eager to dive right into the work. That said, the early stages weren\u2019t smooth\u2014I struggled to decide which specific direction my project should take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A turning point came when I spoke with a graduate student at USC, who shared a few possible ideas. Around the same time, I read several research papers by professors at\u00a0<strong>Harvard<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Ohio State<\/strong>, which helped me narrow my focus to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baryon_acoustic_oscillations\">baryon acoustic oscillations<\/a><\/strong>. After further investigation of all possible resources, I decided to use the\u00a0<strong>DESI Early Data Release (EDR) dataset<\/strong>\u00a0for my study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To work with the dataset, I used&nbsp;<strong>ADQL<\/strong>&nbsp;to pull data from the&nbsp;<strong>NOIRLab DataLab<\/strong>&nbsp;database, then started coding in&nbsp;<strong>Python<\/strong>&nbsp;to process and analyze the results. However, I quickly ran into performance issues\u2014Python was too slow for the scale of computation I needed. That challenge became an opportunity: I taught myself&nbsp;<strong>Java<\/strong>&nbsp;to design more efficient algorithms and data structures, which ultimately sped up the processing by an order of magnitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next several months, I worked intensively on data extraction, algorithm design, and fine-tuning the data model. Step by step, the project came together, and by November 2024, I was able to finalize my research.
